Electricity
Under Michigan's Electric Customer Choice, the generation and supply of power are now opening to competitive suppliers. The electric transmission and distribution businesses will remain under a regulated monopoly utility structure. Customers who choose to remain with the utility are served on default supply service. Default service typically changes only once a year but is subject to various 'true-ups,' (adjustments for previous years) resulting in higher costs than initially projected.
Natural Gas
The Michigan Public Service Commission allows customers of Michigan Consolidated Gas (MichCon), Consumers Energy, Michigan Gas Utilities and SEMCO Energy Gas Company to choose a different company to supply them with their natural gas. Customers who choose an alternate gas supplier will still have their gas supply delivered by the local utility. If customers do not choose an alternate gas supplier, they pay a supply charge known as the “Gas Cost Recovery (GCR)”, which compensates the utility for arranging for the customer's supply. The Gas Cost Recovery changes monthly.
